Inhotim: the biggest open air museum

Cela faisait des années que j’en avais entendu parler je rêvais d’y aller ! A 7h de Rio de Janeiro cet espace hors norme en pleine nature de 110 hectares offre une multitude d’incroyables œuvres d’art moderne. C’est le millionnaire Bernardo Paz qui a ouvert le lieu au public en 2006.

Installations sonores, vidéos, musicales, peintures, sculptures, photographie, architecture tout y est.

I had been hearing about it since years, I dreamed of going there! Located 7 hours away from the city of Rio de Janeiro , this extraordinary 110-hectare natural area offers a multitude of incredible works of all kinds. The millionaire Bernardo Paz opened the site to visitors in 2006.

Sound and video installations, music, paintings, sculptures, photography, architecture: everything is there.

Il y a même une piscine ou l’on peut se baigner c’est totalement dément !

Even a swimming pool where you can swim, it is crazy!

Le tout dans une nature luxuriante qui regorge d’espèces d’orchidées et d’arbres venus du monde entier.

All this in a luxuriant nature full of orchid species and trees from all over the world.

Je suis tombée sous le charme de l’extraordinaire photographe Claudia Andujar. Cette ancienne rescapée d’Auschwitz rejoint sa mère au Brésil en 1955, elle monte ensuite un projet d’étude sur la tribu d’Amazonie Yanomami en vivant avec eux pendant 14 mois. Ses clichés sont renversants.

I fell under the spell of the extraordinary photographer Claudia Andujar. This former Auschwitz survivor joined her mother in Brazil in 1955. She then set up a study project on the Yanomami Amazon tribe, and spent 14 months living with them. Her clichés are stunning.

Je suis tellement ravie de cette sortie culturelle, je l’ai vécu seule tel un moment de pèlerinage et d’introspection personnelle.

I am so delighted with this cultural outing; I experienced it by myself as a moment of pilgrimage and personal introspection. 

Obviously there is many restaurants inside the museum!

Comment y aller ?

Alors la …. J’ai fait fort ! Je ne voulais pas perdre de temps à Belo Horizonte qui est la grande agglomération proche du musée de ce fait, voici ce que j’ai fait :

Bus de nuit au départ de Rio, arrivée à Belo Horizonte à 6h30, bus jusqu’au musée (départ 8h15 arrivée à 10h), 14 km de visite dans Inhotim (!), à 16h30 (le musée ferme à cette heure-là) : bus retour jusqu’à Belo Horizonte, à 22h : bus de nuit jusqu’à Rio. C’est sportif mais ça se fait ! L’entrée du musée était gratuite le jour de ma visite. Regardez la météo avant d’y aller !

How to get there?

I believe…I did pretty well! I wanted to avoid wasting time in Belo Horizonte, the big town next to the museum, so here is what I did:

Take a night bus from Rio, arrive in Belo Horizonte at 6:30 a.m., take a bus until the museum (departure at 8:15 a.m., arrival at 10), enjoy the 14 km visit in Inhotim (!), at 4:30 p.m. (when museum closes ): take a bus back to Belo Horizonte, at 10:00 p.m. a night bus to Rio. It is intense, but doable! Museum entrance was free on the day of my visit. You had better check the weather before!
