volunteering in a orphanage – Myanmar

A l’est de Mandalay se trouve le plus beau lac de Birmanie : le lac Inle.

East of Mandalay is located the most beautiful lake in Burma: the Inle Lake.

Il est possible de faire un super trek depuis le village de Kalaw pour arriver au lac (comptez 2/3 jours) ou bien y aller directement. C’est ce que j’ai fait car une mission de volontariat m’attendait là-bas. Pendant une semaine j’ai donné des cours de danse dans un orphelinat de fille. J’ai trouvé cette structure via une fondation hollandaise sur internet, complètement par hasard. J’ai postulé, envoyé un cv et je fus prise ! Il faut avoir un projet précis car l’aide pour le quotidien est fait par des jeunes filles (orphelines aussi) et elles n’ont pas vraiment besoin d’aide.

It is possible to do a great trek from Kalaw village to reach the lake (this will take you 2 up to 3 days) or go directly to the lake. I did that because a volunteer mission was waiting for me there. For a week, I taught dance classes in a girl’s orphanage. I found this structure through a Dutch foundation on the internet, by pure chance. I applied, sent a resume and I got the job! You need to have a specific project because young girls (also orphans) take care of the daily routine and they do not really need a help.

Je n’avais bien sur jamais donné de cours ce n’est pas mon métier, mais j’ai improvisé ! J’ai été un peu impressionné lors de la rencontre avec les 50 filles dans une salle de classe. Les enfants répètent tous en même temps des phrases qu’ils ont appris en anglais: « Bonjour, bienvenue, ravis de vous rencontrer, merci d’être parmi nous. » C’est un peu surprenant au début. Après m’être présenté chacune pouvait me poser une question : « Pourquoi tu viens dans notre pays ? », «, Qu’est-ce que tu aimes ici ? », « Pourquoi tu voyages seule ? ». Ce n’était pas un exercice facile mais je m’en suis sortie !

I had never taught a course before, I had no experience but I improvised! I was a little impressed when I met the 50 girls in a classroom. The children all repeat at the same time sentences they learned in English: « Hello, welcome, welcome, nice to meet you, thank you for being with us. » It is a little surprising at first. After introducing myself, everyone could ask me a question: « Why are you coming to our country? « , » What do you like here? « , » Why are you traveling alone? ». It was not an easy exercise, but I dealt away with it!

Une fois rentrée dans mon hôtel (il est interdit de dormir dans un orphelinat), je me suis mise au boulot et j’ai commencé à préparer les chorégraphies. Les vigiles de mon hôtel ne devaient plus en pouvoir de m’entendre mettre les mêmes musiques en boucle pour pouvoir caler les pas ! Le lendemain je me suis donc jetée à l’eau en proposant aux enfants de danser sur une première musique : Shakira/ Waka Waka. Ils adorent cette chanson. Tous les après-midi j’apprenais les différentes chorégraphies par groupe de 17 filles, à la chaine. J’étais exténuée, en nage et sans voix à la fin des journées mais c’était pour la bonne cause !

Once back in my hotel (Sleeping in an orphanage is prohibited), I started working and prepared the choreographies. The guards of my hotel should have been really fed up of hearing the same music again and again in order to synchronize the footsteps! On the next day, I threw myself into the water and asked the children to dance to a first music: Shakira/ Waka Waka. They love that song. Every afternoon I was teaching the different choreographies in groups of 17 girls, on the chain. I was exhausted, swimming and speechless at the end of the day, but it was for the good cause!

Le dernier jour on a fait un spectacle dans la cour de l’orphelinat ou toutes les filles ont pu danser ensemble. C’était très chouette on a même fini par danser sous la pluie. J’ai improvisé des pas de hip-hop ça les faisaient rire, j’ai adoré ce moment de partage.

On the last day, we did a show in the courtyard of the orphanage where all the girls danced together. It was very nice and we even ended up dancing in the rain. I improvised some hip-hop steps that made them laugh; I loved this moment of sharing.

J’ai aussi eu la chance de passer du temps avec le « Father House » de l’orphelinat Mr U Tet Tun qui m’a fait visiter plusieurs sites et aussi participer à non pas un mais 2 mariages ! Improbable. Tout le monde me regardait en se demandant ce que je faisais là ! J’ai même eu la chance de rencontrer la sœur de Mr U Tet Tun, une vielle femme magnifique qui habite sur le lac Inle dans une maison traditionnelle en pilotis.

I also had the chance to spend some time with the ¨Father House¨ of the orphanage Mr U Tet Tun who made me visit several sites, and invited me not to one, but rather to two weddings! Improbable. Everyone was looking at me and wondering what I was doing there! I even had the chance to meet Mr. U Tet Tun’s sister, a beautiful old woman who lives on the Inle Lake in a traditional pile house.

Après mon passage j’ai réalisé que cette expérience m’avait encore plus ouvert les yeux sur le monde. Je pense le refaire prochainement, affaire à suivre !

After this rich moment, I realized that this experience had opened my eyes to the world even more than before. I plan to do it again soon, to be continued!
