Il faisait déjà nuit noire lorsque je suis arrivée dans l’effervescent quartier de down town pour rejoindre mon guest house. Mes premiers pas dans la rue furent assez rudes, je n’avais jamais été dans un pays si pauvre. Partout jonches des poubelles, des tas de ferrailles, avec en fond sonore des klaxons à tout va et un brouhaha général. Aucun touriste, aucun européen nulle part. Encore moins une fille européenne seule. C’était impressionnant mais je n’ai jamais eu peur. Les birmans sont très gentil et je n’ai senti aucune agressivité.

It was already dark night when I arrived in the bustling neighbourhood of Down Town to join my pension. My first steps on the street were rather tough; I never had been in such a poor country before. Everywhere littering trashcans, heaps of scrap metal, with horns in the background and a continuous hubbub. No tourists, no Europeans at all. Even less a European girl travelling on her own. It was impressive, but I never was afraid. The Burmese are very nice and I did not feel any aggression.

La principale attraction de la ville est la somptueuse pagode Shwedagon toute d’or vêtue.

The main attraction of the city is the sumptuous Shwedagon pagoda, entirely covered with gold.

Sur les photo ci-dessous j’arrose la tête du buddha pour les gens nés un dimanche. Il y en a un pour chaque jour de la semaine.

On the below pictures I am watering Buddha´s head for people who were born on a Sunday. There is one for every day of the week.

Après avoir exploré les quatre coins du Myanmar pendant 3 semaines j’ai terminé mon séjour par un weekend à Yangon (je devais reprendre mon avion ici), et quel weekend ! J’ai découvert la ville sous un autre aspect et c’était tout simplement génial. Tout d’abord j’ai rencontré 4 français super sympa dans le bus entre le rocher d’Or et Yangon. Ces 4 étudiants HEC faisaient aussi un tour du monde en créant une vidéo culturelle par pays à destination des jeunes issus de quartiers défavorisés. Heureux hasard nous étions dans la même auberge à Rangoun et même dans le même dortoir !

After having explored the four corners of Myanmar 3 weeks along, I ended my stay spending the weekend in Yangon (I was supposed to take my plane back here), and what a weekend! I discovered the city in a different way and it was just great. First I met 4 super nice French people on the bus between the Golden Rock and Yangon. These four HEC (Higher Commercial Studies) students also were going round the world and shooting a cultural video per country for young people from deprived neighbourhoods. By lucky coincidence, we were in the same hostel in Rangoon and even in the same dorm!

Le lendemain soir je fus seule mais j’ai quand même trouvé un compagnon de soirée ; un petit danois de 20 ans que j’ai pris sous mon aile. Nous avons fait la tournée des meilleurs endroits ! Le 7th Joint bar, un before plein de jeune birman et surtout le Penthouse, le meilleur club de la ville avec vue sur la pagode. (On peut aussi venir boire un verre et diner). J’ai fait la connaissance des proprios et nous avons fait une sacrée fête, l’ambiance était au top avec des gens venus des quatre coins du monde.

The next evening I was alone but I still found an evening companion; a 20-year-old Danish boy I took under my wing. We have toured the best places in town! The 7th Joint bar, a before party full of young Burmese and especially The Penthouse, the best club in town with a view on the pagoda. (You also may come for a drink and for dinner). I met the owners and we had a great party, the atmosphere was at the top with people coming from all over the world.

Le lendemain direction la piscine de l’hôtel Inya Lake (ouverte à tout le monde) avec vue imprenable sur le lac. Le plan parfait après des semaines de baroudage ! Il y a aussi un restaurant japonais si on veut changer un peu de la cuisine birmane.

On the next day, we headed up to the swimming pool at the Inya Lake Hotel (open to everyone) with a breath-taking view over the lake. The perfect plan after weeks of adventures! There is also a Japanese restaurant if you are looking for an alternative to the Burmese cuisine.
