a weekend in Hong Kong
Entre le Japon et Myanmar je suis passée à Hong Kong le temps d’un weekend. J’ai retrouvé sur place Valentine une amie avec qui je travaillais à Paris et qui venait tout juste d’emménager sur place. Après un vol de nuit ou je n’ai presque pas dormi me voilà donc fraîchement débarquée à Hong Kong à 4h du matin. Tout en somnolant dans mon taxi j’apercevais un beau spectacle nocturne : les centaines de tours lumineuses de la ville qui défilaient devant moi comme un tourbillon. Associé à la chaleur écrasante je me sentais sur une autre planète, welcome in Hong Kong !
Between Japan and Myanmar I passed by Hong Kong and stopped there for one weekend. On the spot I found Valentine, a friend I used to work with in Paris and who had just moved in there. After an overnight flight where I almost got no sleep at all, here am I : freshly landed in Hong Kong at 4 a.m. Whilst sleeping in my taxi I noticed a beautiful nocturnal show: the hundreds of bright towers of the city parading in front of me like a whirlwind. Along with the overwhelming heat I felt like on another planet, welcome to Hong Kong!
J’ai vite été plongée dans le bain de cette surprenante ville. Hong Kong Island est en réalité toute petite et alambiquée. Les logements sont donc extrêmement cher, plus cher qu’à New York même, mais quelle ambiance ! Tout le monde est en robe de plage ou short, il fait chaud la plupart de l’année et tout prête à faire la fête. Le soir venu la ville bouillonne dans tous les sens et c’est un véritable ballet qui s’opère dans les rue de la ville. Les nombreux expatriés restent la plupart du temps entre eux et forment de formidable bandes d’amis. Bien évidemment je n’ai pas été de reste quand nous avons passé une nuit à écumer les clubs !
I was soon immersed in the atmosphere of this surprising city. Hong Kong Island actually is quite small and convoluted. Accommodations are therefore extremely expensive, more expensive than in New York itself, but what a great vibe! Everyone is wearing a beach dress or shorts, it is hot most of the year and it smells party everywhere. In the evening the city bubbles in all directions and it is a real ballet that takes place in the streets of the town. The many expatriates stay most of the time between themselves and end up as formidable groups of friends. Obviously I was not out of step when we spent the night enjoying all the clubs around !
Le weekend c’est plage pour tout le monde ! A une petite heure de taxi de Hong Kong Island on se retrouve vite sur des plages presque désertes (comme Long Ke Wan) avec farniente au programme. Des treks sont possibles un peu partout et offrent une vue incroyable sur la mer. Le dépaysement est total et contraste avec le béton de la ville. On se croirait en vacance l’espace d’une journée.
On the weekend everyone goes to the beach! A short taxi ride of one hour from Hong Kong Island will quickly bring you onto almost deserted beaches (as Long Ke Wan), where idleness is on the agenda. Treks are possible everywhere and offer an incredible view of the sea. The change of scenery is total and contrasts with the concrete of the city. It feels like a vacation for one day.
Nous avons fait le retour en bateau au coucher de soleil ! Ce fut un super moment.
We went back by boat at sunset! It has been an amazing time.
